Our Trainers

tammy cahillTammy Cahill

You have probably seen this upbeat and cheerful gal during at least one of your visits to the gym. If you didn’t see her assisting one of our members with their health/fitness needs, you might have caught her on the racquetball courts, running on the treadmill or lifting weights demonstrating her personal commitment and love of being fit. Her goals include informing people that no matter what their physical ability or medical restrictions might be, there is an exercise program that will benefit each individual.

Tammy has been a personal trainer here at Sonora Sports & Fitness Center for several years. She declares that she loves motivating and encouraging members to experience the benefits of exercise to understand how rewarding the results can be. Her own quest for a healthier lifestyle began years ago when she suffered a back injury that put her in physical therapy for over a year. Throughout the healing process, she underwent a life-changing experience. Not only did she recover from the injury, she continued giving 100% during her workouts, to eventually lose 90 pounds. She has now transferred that passion into helping others incorporate exercise into any lifestyle and reach goals that appear unattainable.

Along with being an APEX Fitness Professional, Tammy possesses her certifications in Personal Training, Strength Training, Sports Nutrition, Medical Exercise Adaptation for Individuals with Chronic Conditions & Injuries, and Weight Resistance. In her free time, Tammy enjoys swimming, running, racquetball, and any exercise that challenges her current level of fitness; especially those, she said, “that really make you sweat!” Above all, Tammy enjoys being a living testimony to others that “They can do it too!”

brie newtonBrie Newton

Texas-native Brie Newton has enjoyed sports and the outdoors since childhood. At one time or another, she has participated in tennis, soccer, basketball, volleyball, track, skiing, boxing, rugby, wakeboarding and swimming. She was in the pool before she could walk and taught swimming lessons for several years. Brie loves working with people and especially enjoys developing programs with clients that help them meet their short and long term goals.

Brie graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Science before moving to San Francisco where she spent three years enjoying city life and developed an interest in boxing and spinning. After spending an exciting 10 months teaching English in Italy she migrated to Sonora. She loves the area and the opportunity it provides to hike, bike, wakeboard/wakesurf, snowboard, kayak, run, swim, and train for triathlons with other outdoor enthusiasts.

As the Youth Programs Director at Sonora Sports and Fitness she is especially excited about giving young people opportunities to get fit and lead active lifestyles. Prior to Sonora Sports and Fitness she was working with local youth through the Friday Night Live Program at A-TCAA.

She is a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and also has certifications in Optimum Performance Training for Youth, Integrated Core Stabilization, Integrated Kinetic Chain Assessment, Human Movement Science and Neuromuscular Physiology through NASM.

Brie also teaches the Boxing Conditioning Classes. If you want an intense full-body workout, take her class or talk to her about personal training sessions with a boxing format. When not at the gym, you'll find her on her wakeboard, bike, skis, snowboard, or visiting family in Texas.

jon miguelJon Miguel

Jon joined our team of trainers when he decided to turn his love for physical activity into something he does for “work.” Jon has been active all of his life. He has surfed for over 20 years and has also competed in various runs, marathons, Ironman-distance triathalons, duathalons (run-bike-run), mountain bike races, century rides on his bike, and sprint adventure races. You can see why Jon has a passion for bringing the love of being active to others.

Jon was born and raised in Hawaii, but did not leave the ocean too far behind when he moved to the Monterey Peninsula area. There he attended school at Monterey Junior College and Salinas City College. He made Tuolumne County his home two and a half years ago when he decided to look for a community with a slower pace of life and a gym with a pool. Once stumbling upon Sonora Sports and Fitness Center, he and his wife of 25 years made Sonora their new home.

He, his wife and 11 year old son began swimming with Tuolumne County Aquatics, making swimming a complete family affair. Jon has since become one of the “Stroke and Turn” officials for the group and is now a Masters swim coach.

Jon also enjoys wakeboarding, snowboarding, snowshoing, and kayaking. He wants to help people make and meet their own personal fitness goals. He knows first hand how being active can help enhance quality of life, and wants you to experience that for yourself as well.

shanna huberShanna Huber

Shanna comes to Sonora Sports & Fitness with over 20 years experience in the Health & Fitness industry. Two years ago Shanna decided to go a step further and get her certification as a Personal Trainer (W.I.T.S.). She has a particular interest in working with seniors and truly enjoys watching their progress. Shanna can train you on land or in the water.  She has a genuine love for people, family and life!  Her mottos are "Keep it moving, keep it healthy!" and “It’s GOTTA be fun!”

Shanna moved with her husband, kids, 2 great Danes, an d 2 cats, from the East Bay to Sonora for a healthier lifestyle for her family. Shanna enjoyed dance, ice skating, gymnastics, music, camping, and horseback riding as a youth.  She loved being Babar (part time) for the Walt Disney Company for 19 years, still allowing time for being a Mom and wife. Even with her crazy schedule she found time for strength training, participated in duathlons, and competitive running with her husband Roy.

Shanna was a little bit of a late bloomer, deciding at 27 to enter the Fitness Industry.  She has (literally) taken the ball and run with it.  Shanna has been certified in group fitness (AFAA) for 18 years - teaching many different class formats for Corporate Fitness, Gyms, Parks and Recreation and assisted with teaching aerobics for high school. She is always taking continuing educations classes to stay updated and well informed.

Seven years ago Shanna was asked to get certified in The Silver Sneakers Program. This involved a contracted facility where seniors could come and exercise with any fees being billed to their medical insurance.  She saw immediately that she loved working with seniors.  She says, "It keeps me on my toes and my brain thinking about special situations and how to help people make smart choices in their exercise programs."

Shanna went on to obtain certifications in Aqua (NAFTA) and The Arthritis Foundation. Since then she has worked at A Senior Living Community, Club One, City of Antioch, and run a program at Summerset Orchards in Brentwood.  She has also been a speaker for the Arthritis Foundation.

Shanna loves helping people feel comfortable and learn how to achieve their best quality of life through exercise.  She says, "There is nothing better than watching people progress, reach their goals and enjoy their everyday activities!"
